On Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 10:45 a.m., Hibbing Police Department Officers were dispatched to a residence on the 2200 block of 4th Ave West for a male threatening to shoot others, as well as shoot himself, and was armed with a shotgun.
Law enforcement arrived on scene and set a perimeter around the residence where the male was observed to be in possession of a shotgun in the back yard. Officers attempted for nearly an hour to negotiate with the male to put down the firearm but were unsuccessful.
Law enforcement deployed less lethal munitions and safely took the male into custody. The male was transported to Fairview Range for evaluation.
HPD was assisted by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Chisholm Police Department, MN State Patrol, MN DNR and Hibbing Ambulance. HPD Chief Steve Estey personally thanks these agencies for their dedication and teamwork to bring this tense incident to a safe resolution. The top priority of law enforcement is the safety of the public and the citizens they serve. The resolution of this incident ending without tragedy is the greatest result we could have hoped for. Please remember if you, or someone you know is struggling, there is help available.
