On April 24, 2025, at approximately 10:28 hrs. the Hibbing Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in a house in the 3700 block 5th Ave E. We responded with several units and our automatic mutual aid system was also initiated by St Louis County 911. A second alarm was submitted eventually to bring more firefighters to the scene.
When units arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke on the main level of the home. The house was occupied at the time of the fire, but all were able to escape the home without injury.
Fire crews were able to determine the main source of the fire was in the basement and had extended via the walls into the attic space. This created very high heat conditions and heavy smoke on all levels of the home. Extensive overhaul lasting several hours was required to put out the fire.
One firefighter suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to Fairview Range for evaluation.
We would like to thank the Hibbing Police, Chisholm Fire, Chisholm EMS, Keewatin Fire, Virginia Fire, Mountain Iron Fire, Nashwauk Fire, Grand Rapids Fire and St Louis County 911 for their assistance.
The cause is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office and the Hibbing Fire Department.
