[ARCHIVED] Proclamation: Hibbing High School Day in Hibbing

HHS Day Proclamation 7.12.24

PROCLAMATION: In Recognition of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Hibbing High School

WHEREAS, From the earliest days of the village of Hibbing, its citizens have prioritized the value of education and community. When the town was to be moved from its original location in North Hibbing for the purpose of mining the iron thereunder, community leaders advocated for the construction of one central school building in the town’s new location; 

WHEREAS, The school building was constructed between 1920 and 1923, and a dedication ceremony for the new Hibbing Technical and Vocational High School took place on January 28, 1924. The community took great pride in its grand high school, “the Castle in the Wilderness,” which originally housed kindergarten through junior college. With construction costs of approximately four million dollars, the building boasts a grand marble staircase leading to an exquisite library and ornate auditorium;

WHEREAS, From its beginning, Hibbing High School has been a cornerstone of our community. Hibbing’s students, educators, and historic high school have remained our greatest pride. Hibbing High School has well-represented our community in endeavors such as academics, athletics, the arts, and civic engagement;

WHEREAS, For over a century, Hibbing High School has upheld a tradition of academic excellence. In its early days, Hibbing High School educated children and adults from 43 ethnic groups, teaching everything from English and basic subjects to the trades to American citizenship. Through today, Hibbing High School continues to educate citizens prepared to make great contributions to society; 

WHEREAS, In its 100-year history, some 27,000 students have graduated from Hibbing High School. Alumni have made vast, significant contributions to society at both the local and global levels. Their legacy, at home and around the world, will live on for the next century and beyond; and

WHEREAS, The City of Hibbing wishes to sincerely congratulate the Hibbing Schools on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Hibbing High School.

NOW THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, In recognition of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Hibbing High School, I, Pete Hyduke, Mayor of the City of Hibbing, hereby declare July 12, 2024, “Hibbing High School Day” in the City of Hibbing.
