Our Human Rights Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission and Fire Fighter Civil Service Commission each have renewed membership.

Per council action on April 16, a total of eight Hibbing residents were appointed to the three commissions.

Here is how those appointments break down:

Human Rights Commission:

The council unanimously voted in separate motions for the following appointments:

Also in the running were Tenelle Kampsula and Jeff McNickle.

The newly-appointed will join Brian Capanoli and Don Brunette on the six-member commission. Their terms are through the end of this year. City Administrator Greg Pruszinski is also a member of this commission.

The purpose of the Hibbing Human Rights Commission is to secure for all citizens freedom from discrimination because of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, and age. Meetings occur upon request or when circumstances warrant.

They join Mary Keyes of the Hibbing Historical Society and Kari Kilen, a St. Louis County Assessor Clerk, on the commission. Rounding out commission membership is a local architect and a Planning Commission member. Both seats have yet to be filled.

As a member of the Heritage Preservation Commission, each plays a vital role in:

  • Safeguarding the heritage of the City by preserving sites and structures which reflect elements of the City's cultural, social, economic, political, visual or architectural history.
  • Protecting and enhancing the City's appeal to residents, visitors, and tourists and serve as a support and stimulus to business and industry.
  • Fostering civic pride in the beauty and notable accomplishments of the past.
  • Promoting the preservation and continued use of historic sites and structures for the education and general welfare of the people of the City.

The Commission meets four times a year at the will of commission members.

Fire Fighter Civil Service Commission

The current members of this commission have been reappointed to longer terms, as follows:

  • Immediately – Dec. 31, 2028: K. Michael Fredeen

There remains one vacancy on this three-person commission.

The purpose of the Civil Service Fire Fighter Commission is for selection and promotion of Public Safety personnel under the authority of MN Statues Chapter 419 and amendments thereto. Meetings occur upon request or when circumstances warrant.

Following the votes, Mayor Pete Hyduke thanked everyone who applied for a commission/board for their interest.
