Become Career Staff
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED/HSED.
- Certification with the NREMT as a Paramedic or EMT, or the ability to become registered.
- State of MN firefighter licensure or the ability to obtain licensure.
- Valid CPR Certification.
- Class D MN Driver's License equivalent.
- CPAT certification within one year of employment or current certification.
Career staff are required to be licensed as both Firefighter and Paramedic or obtain these requirements within 3 years of employment.
If you are a Firefighter/Paramedic:
- Complete and submit an online application below
- Submit a current CPAT certification or complete CPAT within 1 year of employment
If you are currently a Paramedic with no FF training:
- Complete and submit an online application below
- Complete FF 1&2 certification within the orientation period (paid by the city & trained by qualified staff in the first 4 weeks of employment)
- Submit a current CPAT certification or complete CPAT certification within 1 year of employment
If you are currently a Firefighter/EMT:
- Complete and submit an online application below
- Must complete an accredited Paramedic program within 2 years of your employment date.
- Must successfully pass and acquire paramedic certification/licensure within 1 year of the course completion date
- Submit a current CPAT certification or complete CPAT certification within 1 year of employment
If you are currently an EMT with no FF training:
- Complete and submit an online application below
- Complete FF 1&2 certification within the orientation period (paid by the city & trained by qualified staff in the first 4 weeks of employment)
- Must complete an accredited Paramedic program within 2 years of your employment date.
- Must successfully pass and acquire paramedic licensure within 1 year of the course completion date

Shift Structure
- Three shifts with 8 person crews.
- Crews consist of 2 FF/Paramedic, 4 Engineer/Paramedic, 1 Captain/Paramedic, and 1 Battalion Chief/Paramedic
- 3 Day Shift (M-F) staff including the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and EMS Director.
Shift Length
24-hour shifts, beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 7 a.m. the following day.
Shifts Per month
Career staff is scheduled an average of 9-11 days a month. This does not include OT opportunities.
Shift Rotation
4 shifts on (every other day), 4 days off, 4 Shifts on (every other day), 6 days off, then repeat.
We operate with 3 crews;
- A SHIFT
- B SHIFT
- C SHIFT
There are 8 people staffed per shift. Each crew consists of a Battalion Chief, Captain, 4 Engineers and 2 Firefighters.
Starting pay
Employees are placed in a Pay Grade (#'s 1-23) that is most appropriate based off the position job description. The starting step (letters A-G) within the grade is determined based off previous experience and education.
- Starting wages for an EMT is a pay grade 8. The step within that grade will be determined upon employment.
- Starting wages for a PARAMEDIC is a pay grade 10. The step within that grade will be determined upon employment.

The starting base pay does not include the annual 2.5% COLA increase that is negotiated into our contract. Pay and Benefits are negotiated between the City of Hibbing and the Local 173.

CPAT Information
Candidate Physical Agility Test
This test consists of a series of physical tasks which closely approximates physical tasks routinely performed by firefighters on the job, such as climbing stairs, carrying tools and raising ladders.
Most of these tasks are timed. Applicants are advised to prepare for the agility test for purposes of safety as well as to enhance their chance for a higher score.
With adequate preparation, the average healthy, fit individual should be able to complete the test safely and satisfactorily. During testing, all procedures will be explained in detail and demonstrated if necessary.

CPAT screening procedures meet the following criteria:
- They are job related
- They are not discriminatory on the basis of sex, race, age, etc.
- They represent what experts feel are the most crucial phases of firefighting and emergency medical activities and are indicative of a variety of firefighting and emergency tasks
- They are quantifiable
